I just recently found this site and it looks like a great site for info, let me state my problem.
I have a 1966 75hp Chrysler motor that i recently aquired and am having a problem getting it started, i had to replace the points, plugs, condenser, and the distributor on it to get fire to the plugs, but now it will fire but, will not run at all, and it will really only fire if i spray a gas mix into the carbs. Im kinda new to boat motors, but have a pretty decent background with cars. Any suggestions on what to do next would be very helpful, cant figure it out but i know it has to be a fuel problem. the model nymber on the motor is 75673 if that helps.
And i thank you ahead of time for your time and effort.

Shane

Re: Fuel problems

Hi, Shane.

Pull the line that goes from the fuel pump to the carbs. Put it in a bottle and turn her over. You should get spurts of fuel into the bottle. If you do, overhaul the carbs.

If you don't, pump the primer bulb. If that gives you spurts into the bottle, overhaul the fuel pump.

No spurts even from the primer? Look for restrictions and/or air leaks in the fuel feed from the tank.

Good luck. :)

Re: Fuel problems

Thanks JB
I took the cover off the front of the carbs and observed that i had fuel that would run out after i stopped cranking, so im pretty sure its not the fuel pump, I guess i will have to rebuid the carbs, which is what i was not looking forward to, as its been a while since i have had to do that and i will have to take my time, or just take it to the marina and let them do it as i would like to get on the lake a few more times this fall.
Thanks for the advice, its kinda what i figured
Shane

Re: Fuel problems

I just looked at my carbs, they are the wb 1A do they use the same rebuild kits that are usually suggested i think they are the 18-7037 or the FK10005 mecr kit. thanks for your response.
Shane

Re: Fuel problems

If a engine is getting a good healthy spark, air, and fuel ,,,,, it will run.

Your assumption of a fuel problem is probably correct.

If that engine hasn't been running in several years, and the old style 2 stroke oil & fuel was left in it when it came home from the lake the last time... It has probably made some devilish 'goop' that has clogged the carbs.

Often you can just drop the float bowl and clean everything within reach with a can or 2 of B-12 carb cleaner spray to clean & clear the needle & seat, and fuel passages.

Sometimes it works without a full carb. overhaul, sometimes it doesn't.

As cheap as they are, and as easy as it is to do, I'd put a kit in the fuel pump too.

Re: Fuel problems

ok i got it to run this evening, but only if i had the throttle opened up and the rpm's about 2k, the carb kits will be in tomorrow and i will put them in. It will not idle hardly at all, and dropping below 1k in rpms kills the engine fast, im guessing the carbs need to have a little gunk cleaned out, as it has sat for over a year and im pretty sure past owner didnt clean it up before he last used it. Will put the carb kits in and see how it helps have a fuel pump kit coming as well, im just tickled pink it runs at all, now to fine tune it...Fyi wow those chrysler engines throw a lot of water out the back my garage looks like florida and a hurricane hit....haha Guess i dont have to worry about a water pump for it seems to flood the garage well.....

Re: Fuel problems

Well the new carb kits and fuel pump kit fixed the idle problem, and it now picks up and drops rpms at a quick rate. Thanks for all the help and i will post how she runs this weekend on the lake, I can't wait, its been a long time coming.

Shane
