fuel problems

Hi guys I have a 175 hp mercury that when I idle the motor for awhile the fuel bulb runs dry, now at power it runs fine, my brother-inlaw has a 175 mariner that does the same thing, last time out no problems, anyone have any ideas

Depending on the model and year, I'd say the fuel pump needs rebuilding. The early square ones used check valves that pucker and leak. Rebuilding them is easy and the kits are cheap.

i had the same problem,
i check the fuel filter and it wasent filling up. so i syphoned the gas through, to make sure it was getting to the engine.once i did that it worked with no problems.

Thanks guys, the motor is a 88 175 im going to tear into it tommorrow and se whats up thanks again for the info

be sure to post your results; it always helps when you get a problem figured out and can share what you find. If someone else encounters the same problem then there is a reference of the diagnosis and fix.​
