Well, I thought I had it figured out until I read something the other day about the filter on the bottom of my fuel pump actually being a water seperator. Is this true ? The bottom of the fuel pump has a metal bowl and a bail wire w/a tightening screw. Inside is a pleated paper filter.
84 renken 140h/p merc. w/alpha1

Jackrg

i think it's just a fuel filter. my fuel pump is much older than yers. but has the same discription. also mine is mounted upside down. bowl on top. i don't believe it to be a water seperator, just a fuel filter. just a guess though.

That's what I thought also. The reason I was asking is, I saw one on Ebay that was just like mine only it was described as having a water seperator on it refering to the filter bowl. It got me wondering if that was or was'nt the case. It couldn't collect much water in that small of an area. Just thought Id ask the experts.
Thanks , Jackrg

Water is heavier than gas, so every bowl or container can act like a separator, you only need to mount the "in" and "out" hose on the top of it - and that will do the trick! :)

alex, out of curiousity, how will my bowl act as a water seperator? as i stated above, my bowl is upside down. and it is oem best i know. the fuel lines are below the bowl. only two, in and out. just wondering?? not meaning to hijack this thread, but i think that a water seperater is not a fuel filter and a fuel filter is not a water seperater. feel free to correct me if i'm wrong please. i just don't see how a fuel filter will filter out water. if my bowl were right side up like a cup, the water and fuel in the bowl will still just go on thru to the carb.

That fuel pump is not a seperator. It also will not act like one like Alex said. Just a fuel filter inside the pump bowl.

Didn't say it was... just explaining how separators work.. They is nothing special about them... just plain physics... If you imagine oil + water in a bowl, the oil floats over the water, so if you put water + oil into a container and pump it out high enough, you'll pump out only oil, right? Then you put a filter between the in/out hose and you got a nice fuel filter / separator... The container must be large enough though for it to work... When you clean your fuel separator / filter you actually remove the water that was gathered at the bottom of the container... :)
