Fuel Pump and High Pressure Regulator

I have 2006 5.7. Boat runs fine until warm. Then start hearing high pitch noise from fuel pump. I assume fuel pump is shot. The local Four Winns dealer told me when replacing pump to remove high pressure regulator screen. They said I'll be replacing pump again if I don't leave it out due to ethanol fuel. Anybody else heard of removing screen or more thoughts??

Re: Fuel Pump and High Pressure Regulator

I have heard of the screen fouling up with the paint that peels off the inside of the pump. The ethanol eats the coating that is used on the inside of the pump, it clogs the screen and eventually destroys the pump. Pretty common problem on volvos (they outsource the pumps). Not sure if removing the screen is such a good idea. Can you get ethanol free fuel where you are? Or see if they now make a pump that doesn't have this happen, this has been an issue for several years.

Re: Fuel Pump and High Pressure Regulator

I found this old post that explains the issue:

I had the issue on a new boat that I just got. It's a 2004 Four Winns with 8.1's. it happened when I tried to deliver the boat after it had an 18 month layup. I was so upset by the predictable problem, I called VP. Much to my surprise, I was able to get an engineer on the phone. I asked him what the real deal was. Here is what he said...

First, the pumps are made by Carter and are designed to be non-serviceable so we don't blow ourselves up trying to fix them. I can live with that...

Second, the issue IS caused by ethanol over a period of time. When the gas is allowed to sit, the ethanol separates from the gasoline and becomes concentrated enough to peel the paint. He told me that the further north you go, where the layup is longer, the more issues the are. In the south, where they use the boats year-round and gas does not sit in boats for a long period of time, this never happens.

He told me candidly that the best way to store boats now in the off-season is to store them as empty as possible with stabilizer. The condensation fears are a non-issue compared to the ethanol issues. He said that the minimal amount of water that would develop in the winter would be burned off immediately when the engine is run the first time.

Since I am an "in-water" winterizer using a bilge heater, he told me that running the engine every 2 weeks wil take care of the water, coat the cylinders and preserve the oil by killing the acid that forms which is the real reason oil should be changed.

Sounded like he knew what he was saying...

There is a Volvo Service Bulletin that says to remove the screen and replace it with an e-clip.

Google P-23-7 for the SB.

Thats for the pressure regulator. Doesn't apply to the pump assembly.

Do you guys use ethanol gasoline? In Mississippi you're still able to get it without ethanol and especially in a boat that sits most of the year I will not use it.

Thanks for posting this TSB, I have been looking for that one.

I live in Virginia and am not aware of any place to get non ethanol fuel. If anyone can provide a source, that would be great.
