Volvo penta 5.0gipbycce. Boat has been sitting for more than a decade. I'll spare the details of what I've done. Tried to start it. Turned the ignition on and could hear the fuel pump. Cycled several times but wouldn't start. I took the flame arrestor off and looked down the throttle body and it was bone dry. Long story short I couldn't get it started. I finally poured some gas down the throttle body. It sputtered. Poured some more... almost. Finally some more and she fired up! Hallelujah! I ran it for almost 5 minutes. Stop and start. Sounded great. I don't know however if it is running off the fuel I poured in it or if the high pressure fuel pump started working.
I guess my question is... how do i isolate the high pressure fuel pump to test it. I put a meter to it and have voltage. I can't say with certainty that it comes on. I here a pump run when I turn the key, but I think it is the low pressure pump. If it is the pump, how can I be certain it is a faulty pump? Can the oil pressure sensor switch be responsible for the fuel pump not turning on? I am suspect of the switch since it has sat so long. Any other things I can troubleshoot?
Thanks in advance.

Thank-you. I have checked that link earlier and it refers mainly to a carberated engine. It also states how to test it while the engine is running while under load which mine isnt.
I started this engine on an external tank so the anti syphon valve is not an issue. Great to know about the oil pressure switch... I'm leaning more toward the high pressure pump. Just looking to confirm before I shell out the $ on a pump.
Thanks again!

With the flame arrestor removed you should see fuel spraying from the injectors while cranking. If you connect the fuel pressure gauge after the high pressure pump you should see if it can produce pressure when turned on. You may have a problem with the regulator or injectors as well. These pumps are well known for filter screen clogging for different reasons. While Volvo recommend replacing the entire cell you may want to check the link below:

Ok thanks. On the fuel line after the pump there is a valve like a bike tire. Screw the gauge onto that?

Pump is working. Only one injector is spraying fuel. I'll still get a gauge and check the pressure. Thanks

Yes the schrader valve is for the gauge. You can get your injectors professionally cleaned and flow tested. They are not 5.0-5.7L regular injectors. These are expensive and hard to find.
