I have 68 Johnson 40 H/P. I took apart the fuel pump..didn't take pictures (I know) and when I put it back together, it leaks. I got a Silicon RTV sealant but didn't seem to help.

Where can I buy a new fuel pump for my boat? I've seen some at walmart that are called "fuel filters" I believe....and I think that's all my "pump" is....is just a filter. Anyway, I'm not big on fixing this up...just want a new part.

Any ideas where to look or what I can get to replace this. Is it a bad idea to hook the fuel line straight up to the carburetor without the filter?

Here are some pics of my fuel filter/pump.

I took your advice and went to local marine dealer to get the part.

They couldn't find the right fuel pump for my year(68) so they recommended a '72-'8? fuel pump. It is OMC and model number 438556. The thing is, it cost $55. For a freaking pump...any ideas on where to get it for 20-30$ ish. I hate to pay $50 for a part I have w/ rotted out gaskets.

I'm going to try and reseal the gaskets again. Do I remove the old gaskets and seal with the RTV sealant only? Or do the old gaskets stay there? I tried first w/ old gaskets in there; now I'm removing them and sealin it back up. Hope it helps, we'll see.

RTV sealant won't hold up to direct fuel contact. I would just go with the OEM pump and then you know you have the right parts and it will also work with today’s reformulated fuels. Plus you get a warranty! :)

It all depends on whether you like to play with your motor or use it. Get the pump! if you run your motor without enough fuel pressure you will end up buying a fuel pump AND a powerhead.

now get out there and play!

Bruce
