fuel pump leaking

I have a 1982 200 hp johnson,the primer solenoid isnt working so i have it pointed at the bow, to prime it with the ball, and when i prime it with the ball long enough to prime it manually the lower fuel pump leaks through the hole in the back, but thats the only time ,it doesnt leak once it starts ,not when its running.what causes this and what's the cure?



Also if i prime it manually,after it starts should i turn the knob to the back of boat or leave it facing to the bow?
