Fuel pump problem

I am working on a 2001 Wellcraft, model 22 Walkaround I/O. I helped the owner put a new motor in the boat. It is a GM V8. The issue now is that the fuel pump (electric) does not activate when the key is turned on to first start the motor. The only way to activate the pump is to have the key in the cranking position, then the pump will run. Everything appears to be connected correctly. Is it true that the pump has to be tied into an oil pressure switch to function properly? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Fuel pump problem

Yes. The pump should work in the 'start' position but not the 'run' position with the engine off (if I remember correctly) because there is no or too low oil pressure. Once the engine fires, the pressure switch should allow the pump to come on before the engine dies. You can test very easily by jumping the pressure switch connector.
If the new engine isn't set up for the additional pressure safety switch, you'll have to install it in another port.
