Fuel Pump Question

I recently prepared the boat for its first outing. Last year, I ran the boat completely out of gas. This year when I went to start it, it would not start. I had to prime the carburator and then it fired right back up. I thought this was normal since it was completely out of gas. Now the only way to get it started each time, you have to prime the carburator. If it sets for a while, it will not start unless you prime it. Could this mean the fuel pump is going bad?

Re: Fuel Pump Question

You might have a fuel pump diaphragm going bad. Its not holding its prime and allowing the fuel to backflow into the tank.

Re: Fuel Pump Question

Baha, you either have a bad accelerator pump in the carb. Remove the flame arrester and pump the throttle, it should squirt fuel in the venturi or the carb is dirty. It wouldn't run at speed with a bad fuel pump

Re: Fuel Pump Question

The boat is a 1991 Baja with a 4.3 liter Mercruiser. I rebuilt the carburator at the end of last season and it ran great. What I mean by priming is pouring a little gas in the carburator. I have a big lake trip planned for this weekend. I hope I can get it running. How can i test the fuel pump if I don't have a meter to read the pressure? Any help is appreciated.

Re: Fuel Pump Question

I'm Just Guessing here,.. As you don't bother to supply the Info,...........

So,.... Is your Electric Fuel Pump making any Sound,.?? Or were they still Mechanical in 91,..????.....

Without a Pressure Gauge,..... The Best you can do is try to See if it Flows well,.....
Remove the Fuel Line,+ Add a hose directed into a suitable container,... Then Run the Pump,.....
It's a pretty lame Test,... But better than Nothing......

If you have the Weber 4bbl. Carb...... It's probably just Going Dry,...
I haven't figured out Why,.. But they Do That, when left for a week or more...........
