fuel pump rebuild on 75 HP rude

I bought a fuel pump rebuild kit and installed it on my motor today. It took me about 5 times of putting it back together to not have any of the gaskets and membrane leak. So here is my question, how do I know if the old parts were bad? The center membrane looked ok but was disformed and brittle, not as flexable, unlike the new one. Also how do I know I put the pump back together properly. It runs at idle but I didn't take it out on the water because I didn't have someone with me if I had gotten stuck.

If it runs then I think you got it right, take it out and run it.

On my fuel pump, there is one line coming from the engine that provides some sort of pressure or vacuum and that is what drives that membrane to cause a pumping action to pump the fuel. If your engine is idling for a while then it is probably ok. It sounds like a good idea that you replaced your old one if it was brittle.

If you really want to see fuel pumping out of it then you can disconnect the line going to the carburator, have somebody start the engine and you will see gas squirting out of it. Be ready to kill the engine or you will have gas everywhere. Of course always have a fire extinguisher nearby when working on carbs and fuel systems.

To give you some comfort level that it will rev up you might try just backing in your trailer into the water, fire up the engine and rev it up. I've never tried that myself but I think it is ok to do.

As safety measures I always have the phone numbers of the marinas at the lake (for a tow) and I could always use the trolling motor to got for a bit if i was fairly close.

I did rev it up a little, the boat is mooring on the water for the season. I just haven't had a chance to test it under load.
