Fuel Pump?????s

Well, I just replaced the fuel pump on my 63 18 HP Johnson. The reason I did, was that a friend told me that I needed to. I now have questions though; The glass on the fuel line, should it hold a lot of gas in there all of the time? This is the bulb where the fuel filter resides. I am noticing that I can run the engine for several minutes without any gas in there and it doesn't stall. Is the vacuum from the engine stong enough that it just pulls the gas through without having any amount in the glass?

The old pump did the same thing and that is why I replaced it.

My service books don't mention anything about this. I can hand prime the fuel line hose and it will fill up, but eventually it is gone again or maintains at a small amount.

What is normal? Should I even worry about it? Please help me!

Firehawk

That's normal, Firehawk.

Your engine can run for a while on just the fuel in the carb bowl. The filter bowl usually has little fuel in it. I hope you saved the old pump. You may want it someday.

No worries. :)

FireHawk, I have had automobiles where you could see the fuel in the filter, which seemed to be basically empty most of the time...yet it ran fine... not much too worry about.. I think its a gravity thing.....Ross
