Fuel Pump

Can anyone tell me what the sign and symptoms are for a failing fuel pump?<br /><br />Also, what is the "other" tube from the carb to the pump? is it for carb overflow or for fuel vapors from the pump?<br /><br />Knowing someone will ask: it is the mech. pump on a 1977 Mercruiser 250 (5.7L) with points and good old old stuff

It doesnt pump fuel properly any longer. Someone told me that the tube is for gas that the pump leaks when going bad

It doesnt pump fuel properly any longer. Someone told me that the tube is for gas that the pump leaks when going bad. Take the line off the carb, put it in a plastic milk jug and crank it over and see if there is a good flow of fuel
