fuel sender unit install

Two questions re. fuel system:
1. does the gasket for the fuel sender unit require any kind of liquid sealer? This is on a universal Tempo sender kit. Instructions don't indicate it but I am getting bubbles with soap water around the top of the unit.
2. What is recommendation for changing those rubber hoses to the fuel tank on a 20 yr. old Bayliner? My brother recommends changing them out due to ethanol fuel usage. Other opinions?

thanks,

Joe

The Gasket goes on dry, just snug the bolts.
If the hoses are 20 years old i would at least inspect for dry rot.
I just replaced mine on my 1981 boat when i put the new fuel sender in.

If you don't have a flat surface on the tank; seal it, you don't want gas splashing out. Permatex #2. And like Gary said, check all hoses while in there. I bought a 1988 boat last year, and everytime I open something up, I replace the old crap, just so I won't have to open it up again.

I double checked the installation tonite and there was a lot of crap under that gasket causing the problem. I think I will change the lines too just to be on the safe side, didn't know NAPA sold them, thanks for the tip. No local marina or supply house here for marine parts.

I get the impression that you installed a new Tempo sender. Are you saying that you did not clean up the area where the sender and new gasket went?

You REALLY need to make sure that everything is squeaky clean before you put it all together. Also do not tighten too tight. I am assuming that you are putting the sender into an aluminum tank. tightening too much will strip the threads.....you don't want to go there.

Regards,

Rick
