Fuel Sending Unit Connection

Hi - thanks in advance for your help. I recently had my 80-gallon fuel tank replaced (the other one leaked). The fiberglass guys used a block and tackle to remove my tank and ripped the wires loose while removing the old tank. Now I have a new tank with two wires and I need to hook up the sending unit. I read somewhere that if you're not careful you can cause an exposion. With my luck in life - I need some advice before proceeding. I know that the sending unit connects to the center post. I have a welded on little piece about 1" square - I have no idea what that is for. Can I just hook the ground wire onto the screws that hold the sending unit in, or is this aluminum square for attaching the ground? I know it said to be careful hooking up the power... should I remove the sending unit and hook the wires up outside the bilge to see if the gauge is working and then replace it? Or should I take the boat to a mechanic and have them connect this thing? Thanks - I appreciate your patience and advice! Randy
