I have a Chevy 350 w/ Pre Alpha Outdrive.

I have to replace the fuel seperator kit that's in there. I can't get the filter off. I took it out and screwed it on a 2x4 and let wd40 soak on it and can't get it off

Is there a certain one I need? .10 or .21 Micron? I saw one at Walmart for about $35 would that work or should I get a certain one here on iboats? Here's the iboats search below...

Re: Fuel Seperator

Have you tried useing a quality oil filter wrench to get the old one off? Maybe a big pipe wrench if you have it off and on the bench...

Re: Fuel Seperator

you need a quicksilver water/fuel separator

cut the sheet metal body off the filter and use a chisel and hammer to get the top threaded portion off

put a film of motor oil on the gasket when you install the new one - this will make it easy to remove when you replace it

Re: Fuel Seperator

Funny you bring that up. This past Spring I purchased a new fuel separator for my 4.3 Merc with a mechanical fuel pump. Since I had no room next to the engine I put it 12 inch or so above the engine behind the rear seats.
Well few weeks went by and I decided to take a look inside the filter to see what crap I am pumping. I grab the filter and it's not going anywhere. I tried and tried almost cracking my back seat frame.(made out of wood). So I unbolted the separator and tried everything in my shop to get the sucker off with no luck. I had to cut the filter off and after all that there was nothing in the filter but clean fuel!
So I dont know for sure if I oiled the gasket on the filter before installing the filter but I never ever ran across any filter being stuck like that. So after that I said screw it and sold the system on EBAY.
So did I have a air sucked in? or something else I dont know. All I know it came with this extension tube that goes into the filter to prevent air bubbles and that could of caused the suction??

The only reason filters get that hard to come off is because of improper installation.
Hand tight with one hand is fine, and you don't have to be King Kong in one hand to tighten it. Put some oil on the gasket per the instructions (PS: the instructions do not say grease for a reason, it acts like glue) then turn the filter down till the gasket contacts the housing. Then a half turn or so does the job.
Of course if the gasket surface is corroded, pitted or???? then you need to replace it.

Same with oil filters.
