Fuel Shutoff Required Equipment?

I've been under the impression for years that a fuel shutoff was required equipment for any boat with a below deck fuel tank. I've been reading some posts, however, that some folks get their boats directly from the factory with no shutoff.

Any opinions on the best place in the system for a fuel shutoff? Mine is located on the input of the fuel/water separator, which forced the hose fitting to be on a 90 degree bend. I've been thinking of moving it to the fuel tank feed tube, as both places are directly under inspection plates and I would have a straighter run to my fuel line. It would make things much cleaner. Any opinions on why I should NOT do this?

Thanks,
Dennis

hello
the only requirement for hardware is if the fuel line drops below the level of the tank it must have an anti-siphon device.

Re: Fuel Shutoff Required Equipment?

The following is from the Code of Federal Regulations. It is not required for outboard boats but it does for ABYC/NMMA certification of recreational boats.

183.568
Anti-siphon protection.

Each fuel line from the fuel tank to the fuel inlet connection on the
carburetor must:
(a) Be above the level of the tank top; or
(b) Have an anti-siphon device or an electrically operated fuel stop valve:
(1) At the tank withdrawal fitting; or
(2) Installed so the line from the fuel tank is above the top of the tank;
or
(c) Provided that the fuel tank top is below the level of the carburetor inlet,
be metallic fuel lines meeting the construction requirements of Sec.
183.538 or “USCG Type A1” hose, with one or two manual shutoff valves
installed as follows:
(1) Directly at the fuel tank connection arranged to be readily accessible
for operation from outside the compartment, and
(2) If the length of fuel line from the tank outlet to the engine inlet is
greater than 12 feet, a manual shutoff valve shall be installed at the
fuel inlet connection to the engine.
