I just bought a 1989 Chaparral 198CXL 2 weeks ago. Gas spills out the relief vent when I'm filling it up. I have no warning when it's going to do this. Also, this afternoon as I was heading out to work, I noticed that there was gas spilled on the driveway beneath the boat. Apparently the hot day caused the tank to pressurize, causing gas to spill out the vent. It made a mess out of the side of the boat and lifted the striping from the side. Any ideas for a fix would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I had the same problem. Found a kink in the vent hose, now its fine.

The vent hose was only allowing ventilation under slight pressure, it wasn't allowing air in. The fuel would build up pressure behind the kink and all of a sudden I would get a rush out the vent.

Hope this helps.

Aldo

I had same problem...tried to clean out vent hole but was able to resolve problem by disconnecting vent hose at tank and blowing. Water came out indicating it had entered vent and settled in a low spot.
Ty 1990 4.3L merc

Try looping your vent hose.It will act like a gooseneck. That should solve your problem.
