fuel starvation????

i have a pontoon boat with a merc 115 inline six. it idles rough, it can really be felt because it shakes the boat. at full throttle it goes o.k. but doesn't really sound right probably not hitting on all 6. sometimes the rpm's will increase and it runs smoother like all cylinders are firing and i can feel it accelerate. then after a hundred yards or so it slows again. initally i thought it was prop bushing slippage or cavitation but with neither of those conditions would allow it to accelerate. the fuel filter and the lines are clear. could it be the bulb? i switched tanks with no success. new plugs made no difference. i was told by a friend that it's probably crud in the bottom carburetor. he had to rebuild his 3 times in about 6 years. could that be it or could it be an intermittent electrical problem?
thanks in advance, jo

Re: fuel starvation????

If your engine has a dist. clean the cap and rotor, don't try to get the rotor off it's part of the shaft and if broken is $100+ next try and adjust the carbs if that don't work you will have to clean all the carbs

Get a spark gap tester at your local auto parts store. Verify that you have consistent spark on all cylinders.

I found that a good Sea Foam decarb is a good way to clean up bad idling when the WOT performance is satisfactory. Worked for me.
