Fuel system

Two questions gents,

1. I have calculated that I can get about 100L under the floor in my Haines hunter V17C boat. I have just gotten hold of a 150 opti and need more fuel storage. Has anyone got any ideas for fuel storage?

I was thinking about those boat seat boxes, I could get maybe 40-50 litres in each side box, with them draining into the underfloor tank (in series).

Also I cannot put a tank near the transom due to the knee braces I have incorporated to strengthen it.

Heres a drawing of what I am thinking.

2. The outboard I have is a Merc 150 opti 2005. It has 600hrs on it. Is this excessive and what is the usual hours before a rebuilt is required (in general)?

Re: Fuel system

That opti can burn 15 gal (60 L) per hour. You will want a 50gallon (200L) tank, I would think. Why not have a single tank under the deck? My 21 footer has a 63 Gal tank under the deck that takes up maybe 1/4 of the length of the boat. If that is not feasible (which would be strange), how about a large (24Gal) portable tank on the deck (gunwale to gunwale) and a permanent tank under the floor? Use some kind of selector valve and a single fuel line to the motor. A quick disconnect on the portable tank makes it easy to remove, when you don't want the extra fuel.

I will have a Tank under the deck that runs about 3/4 of the length of the boat:

Maybe a better option than my last idea as you have said is to put another 80L up in the nose with a quick disconnect into the underfloor tank?

Re: Fuel system

Can you raise the floor a bit to allow for a larger fuel tank? Is it a custom tank? if so don't use fiberglass to fabricate it.

Re: Fuel system

You are creating a severe fire hazard by using gravity to fill the belly tank from above deck tanks. All it takes is a leak in any of the connecting fittings or hoses and -- well -- rethink this plan please. The only way that is acceptable is to use a fuel selector valve. Each tank feeds one INPUT port on the valve. One output port feeds the line going to the engine. Remember, the engine has a fuel pump so gravity is not required in your fuel system. Besides, each tank is supposed to have an anti-siphon valve. If that were the case, the upper tanks would never feed the lower tank.
