Hi All, Wanted to see if you guys new what was up with my fuel tank. I have takin my boat out the last couple of weekends, mainly trolling and today I pulled my 6 gal fuel tank out to go top it off and I noticed that it was caved in from the pressure. It has a fuel pump installed on the motor and is obviously being caved in from the fuel pump sucking up the fuel. Should I have a vent for the fuel tank? It hasn't caused any problems and the boat runs fine, this is just the first time i've notice the fuel tank basically imploding itself really weird. Any thoughts on this? Should I be worried? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I has to be vented somewhere. Fuel goes out and air has to come in, or the fuel pump reaches a vacuum-locked stalemate and no fuel gets to the engine. Many are vented with a knurled screw in the middle of the cap for the tank.

Does it happen to be a new Moeller portable tank? The new ones have a new EPA compliant vent/cap. They are terrible, mine didn't work at all and would do the same thing. You need a new cap if yours is already open to the vent position.

It seems to be a pretty common problem with the new caps.

I found my old cap from my old portable tank and used that instead. Works great now.

Ayuh,.... All fuel tanks need to be vented,.... Look at the cap, there's probably 1 there...

Nice! thanks guys, Yes there is a little vent in the middle of the cap, I was wondering what that was. I will give that a whirl and let you know if it does it again.
