I have a 30, year old 125 gal. aluminum fuel tank ( gas ). I took the sending unit out, and peered inside.
there is some varnish, and specks of black stuff in it. I was thinking about pouring some acetone in, and
sloshing it around, and pouring it out - repeating as necessary. Does this sound applicable?

Do you have a pick up truck? I put in a few gallons of fresh fuel, drop in a 2' long piece of stainless chain, seal it up and put it in the back of my truck. After a few days the chain sliding around in the gas the tank is squeaky clean.

Arn't there baffles that would hinder the chain from migrating around?

Put some E85 in the tank for some time.
If 10% ethanol is great at getting all of the old gunk loose, just imagine what 85% ethanol can do.
