We have just pulled out the gas tanks and found ALOT of rust(inside neck / on outside) & pin hole leaks.

Can these be restored/ Is it worth it OR should we just get new ones? I would NOT want a clogged fuel line out in the water
Do they make these anymore or are there plastic replacements?

I would replace with plastic tanks if I was doing it. Rust is a ***** and you never can get it all.

Just went through the same thing this year, your tanks look like they are over 20+ years. I tried to fix the pin holes in mine, heat cause them to warp and not seal and metal too thin due to rust and they still leaked. Only sure solution was to have new made from aluminum. This removed the threat of gas in the hull of the boat. Never did like the big bang theory.

Re: Fuel tank Questions

Thanks for the quick responce.
Don't want any Bangs! So my only REAL solution would be Aluminum or Plastic tanks.

Where is a good place to buy/get info on these tanks?
Can I get tanks to fit into the same location or do they have to be custom mounted under the floor or some where?

Thanks,
Bryan

Re: Fuel tank Questions

When I look at the pics it must have been the same company that made mine, unreal..
I looked into placstic and ready made tanks but all were standard and mine was custom to location and size as are yours (saddle tanks). Most metal bangers will not fabricate gas tanks due to liability. So I found a metal fab company that made gas tank extentions for big trucks. I gave him the old tanks as the template and he returned tanks that slid in like a glove and all the hook ups were exact, senders fill pipe and breather. Tank had baffles for strenth and slosh. He even added an angle on the bottom and side to bolt the tanks down with where the old tanks like yours needed straps.

Thanks llerrad
I was trying to figure out how much fuel each held. Do you have the name of the company you used. How much did they run you, if you don't mind me asking?

If i went with a standard plast or alum. I'd have to mount it ina new location, like under the floor1, right?

Bryan

Re: Fuel tank Questions

To calculate the volume this is math long lost to me as the tanks are not square. Suggest you take five gallon can and fill with water to see how much they hold. Alternate tanks store bought you will have to find space somewhere. Don't know where you are located but here you go:

City Wide Welding Inc.
1867 DREW RD.
MISSISSAUGA, ONT.
L5S 1J5
905-677-0316

He is into marine work, props skegs and stuff.
He will give you a cost based on size of tank.

Re: Fuel tank Questions

probably perko, 18 gal. their plastic saddle tanks have somewhat different dimensions. biggest problem for me was the bottoms were not rounded, had to replace existing welded in mounts. aluminum boat. another problem was most catalogs don't list a left and right tank. i used both lefts and had to shorten and lengthen hoses for reversed fuel out and vent location.
