Fuel tank questions

Tried to run my old 9.8 Merc today and it started great but quit running after a few minutes. When pumping the bulb it never would get firm. I can see gas and air leaking where the black connector plugs onto the brass piece on the tank.

Other than connecting the fuel line to the tank, does the brass piece have any other purpose?

More than likely it is.the black fitting itself. You could just put a barb on the tank and attach the hose directly. I.would recommend that you not use the gray fuel line. That line has a plastic liner that likes to break loose and cause fuel system problems.

Excellent, thanks! That's my exact reason for asking, I was hoping to eliminate those fittings if possible. Thanks for the tip on the gray fuel tubing. I'll buy some black rubber fuel hose from the auto parts store and buy a new prime bulb if I can find one, otherwise I'll try the new fuel hose with my current bulb.

Thanks again for the help! I bought some Gates fuel line, Mecury primer bulb, and a brass barb fitting for the tank and all is great now :joyous:

It's amazing how well this old motor still runs after sitting for over 2 years.
