Discovered yesterday that the base of my fuel tank around the seam has started to leak. This carry-on can is for my 57 Evinrude(origional) so I guess I can't complain to much however I was hoping that I could use a sealant like they use on car gas tanks. Has anyone had success with this approach? I would also like to replace the duel line fuel line but was told this line was hard to find.Any info.. would be appreciated.

Re: Fuel Tank

Hi, Loco.

I know this isn't an engine problem, but it is unique to early OMC fuel tanks, so I will move it to JohnnyRude Troubles.

Good luck. :)

Re: Fuel Tank

I have had real good sucess with JB weld on metal tanks. Held for years. Or, as you say, the fuel tank repair from auto parts stores will work fine. The fuel lines are hard to find, but they are around. Someone will know... There are some tanks on E-bay that come complete with the lines, but are kinda high...

Re: Fuel Tank

One approach you could use is to switch to a single line fuel tank by using a fuel pump. This will solve your tank, and hose problem, and make the engine more reliable. To do this, you need the pump, and intake by-pass cover from an early 70's 25 HP. This will bolt right up to your 18. You will also need a single line receptacle, This replaces your double line, and also bolt's right up. Unscrew the air nipple from the manifold, and replace with a 1/8" pipe plug, and you are set to go.

Re: Fuel Tank

Hi loco
Bottom line, if your tank is leaking at the seams, it is shot. Don't mess with tring to seal it. Get rid of it, just the tank part. Save the top portion. Find another tank at a yard sale or somewhere. Test and rebuild it using new gaskets, hose and parts from you old tank if needed. Don't forget to rebuild the connector also (new o-rings). That hose is still available, I think Napa auto supply can order it for you. you my have to buy a little more than you need at this time though. Don't worry about that the extra is easy enough to sell. If you don't like this idea then go the route RJohnson suggested. The only draw back to making the switch is it will usually cost more, unless you have a spare parts stash.

Re: Fuel Tank

It does sound like a good time to "update" the engine to a fuel pump. There is a safety thing with the presure tank, if you were to have a fire the presure in the tank keeps feeding gas to the fire! Just a thought.
