I've been trying to loosen the filter so i can change it....not having much luck. does anyone have any tricks they could share on how to get this filter free ?? its a Yamaha if that makes any difference and where it is mounted on my SS18 is very flimsy so i'm not getting real good torque.

many thanx

Can you warm it up with a small propane torch without causig a fire? If no Id just remove it to not damage the boat and fix or just get a new one.

Fire near fuel? I wouldn't. Maybe a hair dryer, but even then I'd make sure my life insurance was paid up.

This one of those canister types, that looks like an automotive oil filter? If so, did you try an oil filter strap-type wrench? Or there's the old drive a screwdriver through it to make a lever trick.

The strape-type oil filter wrench works like a charm, but you do need to be able give it some torque. I suggest mounting it so you can get good torque or at least use clamp to hold the unit in place, then slide the strap onto the filter - slowly add torque to remove the filter. It'll give, but requires more oomph that would expect.

I would defianately remove the whole assembly and take it apart on a bench. Then when putting it back together make sure you mount the filter head to something solid...even if you have to fab something up. Also, make sure u lube the gasket on the new filter and dont over-tighten it.
