Fuel Water Separator Question

I pulled off my Sierrra Water/Fuel Separator for Volvo I/O, dumped the contents and then reinstalled. The next weekend the boat started, ran for a few minutes then died. Realizing that the only thing I messed with was the fuel separator I removed it again and noticed it was about 1/2" shy of being full so I filled the separator to the top and reinstalled and the boat ran great for 2-days. Then, on the 3rd day the problem happened again, I removed, filled and reinstalled and it worked for 1-more day. I realize I should have changed the separator and will do so, but does this sound like a water separator problem or a fuel pump problem? Is a separator supposed to be 1/2" shy of being full or does that indicate anohter problem.

Re: Fuel Water Separator Question

If all was well before, I think you are drawing air at the separator cannister o ring.
Should be full of fuel.

Re: Fuel Water Separator Question

The separator should be full.

The separator canister gasket is leaking. Very common when trying to reuse old components.
