I have a early Yamaha 150 v6 (1984) and it has the standard fuel filter mounted on the engine. It is mounted after the inlet barb from the fuel hose. I would like to install a fuel/water separator. Does the fuel/water separator such as the Racor, replace the standard Yamaha filter or is it installed along with the standard Yamaha filter? If it is installed with the standard fuel filter, where in the fuel line is it installed?

Re: Fuel / Water Separator

The Racor (or any other brand of fuel/water separator) is mounted external to the engine and does not replace the manufacturer installed fuel filter. Typically, the fuel/water separator is mounted on the transom or any other easily accessible location that is close to the fuel line routing from the tank to the engine. Make sure you leave enough room under the fuel filter element to remove it for periodic replacement or bowl cleaning. A typical arrangement is for the boats internal fuel tank line to be routed to the fuel filter head inlet (you'll need a barbed hose attachment) then from the fuel filter head outlet to the engine fuel line inlet point.
