Fuel / water separator

I have a fuel/water separator and mount that I got from NAPA a while back. I mounted a 19 gallon fuel tank in the bow of my boat and the separator right close to the tank with the fuel line running under the deck to the outboard motor. Took a while to get the fuel to the motor using the primer. Motor starts fine but while it's running the primer bulb collappes. Any thoughts on this?
Was thinking maybe the filter was to restrictive.

Re: Fuel / water separator

Hi Motorvator,

The usual reason for the bulb collapsing is that it cannot draw sufficient fuel while the motor is running. This means there's a restriction somewhere, and normally this is at the tank itself. First, check that the tank air vents are not blocked. Also check the line between the tank and the bulb for kinks - it takes very little to restrict fuel flow.

Having said that, I would suspect your new item - the fuel/water separator. If you have installed it between the tank and the bulb, it could be the reason for any restriction. Easy way of telling is to remove it, run the motor, and see if the bulb still collapses.

The motor's presumably running OK. If so, the pump has enough power to pull fuel. A better position for the separator would be between the bulb and the motor.

Re: Fuel / water separator

Thanks for the reply Ciao.
I will try it with filter removed. Don't have alot of room to mount it by the motor but will look into it.
Thanks again.
Phil

Removed the separator, primer didn't collapse. Good fuel flow. Moved the separator back by the motor and behind the primer bulb. Works fine on the muffs. Will try on the water tomorrow.
Phil
