What does the fuse do that is located inside the cowl on a mercury 45HP, 1986, 4.cyl. (Serial number: 0A981247) ?

I have been having cold starting issues and I have tried tuning my carbs, replacing spark plugs, replacing entire fuel line (it was sucking air). Once I finally manage to get it started (after 2 - 3 hours of trying) the boat will run great and take my 17' tracker 30MPH. Since it will run with good power and smooth, I don't believe it is compression (although I haven't checked the compression).

This last time out I took it out, I was messing around with it looking at things, and noticed that there is a blown 25A fuse right up next to the block. I can't really tell what it is meant for. Can this be a reason as to why I am having starting issues? Does my outboard have an alternator, b/c I didn't think that it did?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

To be a little more clear. The fuse is an inline fuse that is in one of the electric lines that is in the main harness assembly.

That fuse is for the wiring in the loam going to the key switch, power trim if equip't, dash panel and instrumentation and etc. from the control box

I haven't noticed anything electrical not working with this fuse being blown. It has power trim which works, everything in the control box works, power gets to dash, and speedometer works. It really doesn't look like it, but maybe the boat has been re-wired without needing this fuse?

Could it be for the choke actuator?

My Merc 45hp Classic Fifty has an electronic choke when the key is pushed in the choke slams shut.

That could explain the cold start problems, having no choke?

Thats a good guess Sandman* but I am certain that it is not for the choke actuator. The choke actuator is working perfectly and flipping the butterfly valves like crazy.
