hello, I have a small 40 HP merc outboard and everytime I try to start the engine it will blow the yellow 20 amp fuse. What is going on? The boat sat for 3 years and we have had most problems fixed but it's in the water right now so I need to know what has happend. Help would be much appreciated.

thanks,
sean

I'm no expert but sounds like you've got a short somewhere. I would check any and all wires for cuts or knicks where they might cause a short. Also look for spots on the engine that looks like something has been arcing. If the starter isn't engaging rig up a jumper wire from the battery and touch it to the starter terminal on the solenoid just to see if the starter is okay. If you don't have a repair manual for that motor, get one. Follow the instructions for troubleshooting electrical problems. Be careful and hope this helps.

Hello Big Sarge,

Respectfully... 40s come in a lot of different flavours. 2, 3 and 4 cylinder, 2 stroke, 4 stroke, remote control, tiller control, oil injected, premix.... Without at least a year we have no idea which service manual to look in... You do have a service manual don't you? What about a multimeter?

There is a 'sticky' posting at the top of this forum telling anybody who reads it, how to get the most out of a question... Have a read of it and then get back to us with the info we need to be able to help you....
