Is that going to be a "bad" thing for us as owners? Less HP? Use more fuel? More maintenance?

Yea, new EPA regulations became effective in 2010 for new engines and full engine replacements (I believe). It sets the emission standards for sterndrive/inboard engines (as well as other engine types), which need Cat converters in order to meet.

Not sure if there is a substantial amount of concern/issue on the points that you raise, but exhaust system service certainly is more $$$.

I better order that dual carb kit for my 5.7. As long as there are 5.7L parts, I will never go to a Cat converter motor.

Volvo will be using the Next gen 4.3 LV1 engines
Both the 4.3 and 6.0 engines are fully closed cooled, even the exhaust, so corrosion is not an issue and the exhaust should last a lifetime.
Volvo warranties the cats for 3 yrs/480 hrs. I will be going into my 3rd season with the 6.0l with cats. No issues, very fuel efficient when compared to BB alternatives, Performance is awesome, and the cats require No maintenance.

The Volvo 225 is based on the 5.7 Gen 1e, which is the only 5.7 marinized by GM.

No, in the long run any additional cost brought on by the Emissions Standards will be easily balanced out by the benefits. Regulating emissions to reduce them on watercraft really was long over due.
