Future use/sale of 2 strokes?

For the past few years I've been hearing that 2-stroke outboards either won't be manufactured or that there is a law banning the manufacture of 2-strokes in 2006.And yet I see that Yamaha and Evenrude are still making them.
As a commercial user of outboards can I still use and rent 2-strokes after 2005?
I have some older outboards that run good but will not meet the EPA's requirements, what happens to these motors in thse future.

Thanks.

Re: Future use/sale of 2 strokes?

The law does not band 2-strokes per say. the old 2 strokes would not have met the new emissions standards that go into effective in 2006 and thus can not be sold any longer.

Having said that the new 2 stroke E-tec does meet the 2006 standards and will still be marketed and sold after the 2006 deadline.

As for the old, they will be grandfathered until their demise

In fact BRP is eliminating most of the 4 strokes next year and has plans to eliminate them all, replacing them with DFI and E Tecs. What’s being banned is the manufacture of "dirty" motors. It makes no difference if they are 2 stroke or 4 stroke.

They don't pass 2006 emissions. Gone.. July 31, 2006 when the emissions standards go into effect.

Thats good I love the 2 stroke E-tec. That old Force smokes to much I think it should cut back on the cigs. :)

How about what happens to them in the present: Right Now...

Here in California...there are areas that forbid all carbureted two-stroke engines...PWC and outboards.

Here's a pic to show what happened to them...this is at a rental marina in Southern California...

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=17;t=039721#000000

Thanks for reading...Chuck

Re: Future use/sale of 2 strokes?

There is a lot of misinformation about emissions and regulations over the years.

The 2006 EPA regulations do not ban 2-strokes or affect any outboard motor technology or emission output!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those regulations ONLY apply to manufacturers, not the public, and their AVERAGE total emission output for all their motors for a model year.

California CARB regulations that have been in force since 2002 applies ONLY to California new motor sales. They require new motors to emit the 2006 industry average emissions PER engine. Two-strokes are fine IF they meet those specs. Older motors are "grandfathered" in and there are no plans to eliminate them.

NOT TRUE!!!

Johnson has a full lineup of 2-stroke outboards up to 175hp for 2006.

Read my previous post- EPA 2006 regs do not apply to individual outboards.

Re: Future use/sale of 2 strokes?

Here in WA State I heard that they are specifically banning 2stroke engines from fresh water lakes because of the oil exhaust etc.......not the manufacture of them etc....

NO offense to anyone, but you'll find that liberals will tend to go around outright banning of something, they'll make it so it's unuseable and you will be forced to comply.

Well if you can't fish on a lake or in certain area's of Puget Sound with a 2 stroke then you'll comply.......

Sneaky but effective.

Just bought a 2 stroke 8hp Mercury from iboats.com last night - they rock.......it goes on my bathtub racer where I intend to make as much noise and smoke as possible while racing!

All non-compliant JohnnyRude 2 strokes under 40HP must be sent to The Hideout for proper disposal ( ) by the end of 2006.

No offense taken but there's plenty of Liberals and liberals up here, but no 2-stroke bans. Same goes with the rest of the world I would think. Perhaps you're looking for a better word? I call them nannies.
The two stroke bans you have are clearly ignorant laws, and will need to be changed. I expect you'll see BRP doing a little lobbying in the future.

The police will conduct random searches of homes and businesses starting at 6:00am on August 1, 2006. Anyone in posession of a two stroke engine will be shot and then hung on a flag pole as an example for everyone to see.

That may be true, but that doesn't prevent regional enforcement of stricter rules. The Lake Tahoe Basin (Lake Tahoe and a few smaller lakes nearby) does not allow carbureted two-stroke engines on their lakes.....grandfathered or not :) If you have one...you are not allowed on the lake. It's too bad...'cause that's one of my favorite lakes...

Thanks for reading, Chuck

PS... Seahorse...that's cool avatar :)

Paul - I was agreeing with you, if you can't ban something (ie 2 strokes, guns, etc) then you just enforce enough rules so that they can't be used.

It's sad but true.

Never mind that one single 747 taking off dumps more pollution in the air than all of Seattle traffic in one entire day (I read a report about this years ago)......

Lets worry about a 2 stroke instead of 4 kerosine guzzling tubojets.
