I have a Standard Horizon CP180i with the FF520 fish finder module and DST525 in hull transducer. I have the transducer mounted in a place that I know is only fiberglass; my hull is not cored. I took it out yesterday and the screen is pretty grainy and doesn't display fish as the "echo arch" you would expect, but more like a blot. The only thing I didn't do when I mounted it was sand off the paint where the transducer was going. Is that really a big deal? Would that cause the grainyness?

check were you ran the transducer wire, you want to try to run it away from any battery cables or long 12 volt runs. its possible it can pick up interference that way and make sure you have a good ground.

The arches for the most part is a software feature of a popular sonar manufacturer. ;) Unless you are in zoom mode, chances are that you will never see an arch.

The graininess could be caused by a lack of resolution or you have not adjusted the display settings on the unit correctly. Not sure about SH. On my Furuno I have a full array of display settings (hue, contrast, bright, etc.) at my disposal.

The paint would have nothing to do with quality of the display

Ok, I will keep tweaking the display and see what comes up. I did change some settings and it was more clear.
