fwc temp vs. raw water cooled temp

I have a Mercruiser 165 IL6 that is raw water cooled. At 3200 RPM' the temp is ~160. If I open it up the temp climbs past 180. I don't run it at WOT for long periods of time. I am planning on converting to a fwc system this winter and am wondering if I will see an increase in temp. I imagine the heat transfer will be decreased because of the heat exchanger now cooling the coolant in the closed system, thus causing an increase in operating temp. If so, what will my normal operating temp be, 180-200?

your talking about a clsoed system right? well i have one on my I/O and i run coolant in it and i have never had any problems with over heating. if you just run water in it you may have a problem but if you use an additive like anti-freeze or water wetter it should help keep you cool, with the added bonus of not having to drain your block in the winter

With the raw water cooled motor you Should run the 143* T-stat....
With a Closed System, You can use the 180* T-stat.....
A Warmer engine runs more Efficently, But, Saltwater will Attack the engine more serverely at the higher temps...

Tony....Glad to see you've got that old barge running Right!
