Is this normal? Boat shut off on trlr - throttle lever in neutral position - am able to spin prop in clockwise dir but it ratchets. Yet underway, all gears work fine. I've heard that in neutral position, prop is supposed to spin freely in both directions with NO ratcheting?

The shift cable is out of adjustment just a little too far one way and the shift dogs are touching. You should adjust the cable so it doesn't ratchet. In the water, you just can't hear it, but it's still doing it.

It could if it was hitting hard enough. But, as the cable wears, will it get worse until it rounds over the shift dog and gears?

Mmmm....not good! The other day my friend was looking at the prop when he noticed the ratchetting and mentioned that he thought that was not normal. I honestly think that was how it was since day one.... a 2006 boat. A couple years back I took the boat to a marine shop and they adjusted some cable because it would "pop" out of gear into neutral while cruising at no wake/idle speed. That cured that problem...but maybe caused another??? Am going to adjust cable as DonS mentioned and see what happens. Do plan to pull drive between now and next season to inspect/replace any parts (gimbal bearing/bellows, etc...)
