Re: g3 1652

The 20HP will move it fine, get you to the ducks/fish O.K., but it all depends on how far and how fast you want/need to go. Some folks use a rule of thumb to never use less HP than 80% of the boat's Maximum recommended HP, in your case that would be 40HP. Lots of folks feel it's "always better to have some extra HP". I have an 1870 jon boat with a 90HP on it, but I feel like 70HP might work just about as well, for our purposes. Good Luck!:)

Hipster, why are you still looking? I found you the perfect boat!:p I think you'd be happier with a forty on that G3. Fuel consumption should be only marginally more compared to a twenty, and you'll be glad you have it when you encounter storms or strong current.

You will also be happier w performance when taking 2 friends, some dogs, and lots of other gear on your hunting trips w the 40hp alot more than a 20, when you need to have a hasty return trip in Incoops mentioned conditions.

The 20 will move the boat but the 40 would be better and probabaly help when you go to resell the boat but if slow and steady is all you want the 20 will do fine.

Re: g3 1652

The 1652 will get up on trhe water easier with a load than a narrower Jon.
Lightly loaded a good running 20 could reach 28-29 mph.
Your top speed will likely be lower but the speed will hold up better when loaded.
We have an 18 ft Crestliner Voyager utility that had a old Gale 25.
It would plane easily with 6 adults. We skied with a 100 lb adult spotter starting on 2 and dropping one.
If you have a good solid 20 I think you will be ok.
I don't mean to imply that a 40 is too much ,it would make the boat scoot.
Our Crestliner now has an Evinrude 50 tiller, talk about scoot!

Re: g3 1652

I am no expert but I have been in, or trying to outrun fast moving, developing storms, more than a few times when we wished the boats we were in were faster. I also assume that a higher or max HP boats engine does not work as hard as a smaller one, and might last longer if pushing a heavish load alot of the time. But again i'm no expert! My 03 G3 1860 has a F90 on it and it goes faster than some conditions will allow wo beating the snot out of passengers and the boat. But it is plenty of fun to run and and ride when the water is not too choppy. I have'nt tried skiers yet but i am going to try a big tube this year. I believe w the 4 blade props holeshot performance a skier would either pop out of the water, have the rope yanked from their grasp, or dislocate a shoulder!! I am also not fond of underpowered autos.

Re: g3 1652

I have a C1652V (crestliner,rated 60hp console,35 tiller);first couple years I used a 40hp(Suzuki DT),went around 32-33mph.Currently using an older 30hp(Mariner/Yamaha,1987),goes 28mph,both tillers.These speeds are by myself(175lbs) but with fishing gear,batteries,trolling motor etc.(approx.250lbs).
You will most likely go faster because the hull of my boat has a tunnel...I've read it hurts top end(approx. 3mph).
I like the 40hp...not just because of the 4-5 mph extra top end but the time it took to get there was pretty quick:)

Like others have said, a 20hp would do it but if you are going to be taking other people and carrying a load, your going to wish you had more.
I'm currently trying to buy a 25hp etec from a guy,I heard there a pretty strong outboard in the hp range and most(95%)of my fishing is done by myself.
