I have an older 1989 Evinrude 50 on my pontoon boat. It didn't come with a tach and I have gotten an old Gaffrig 04446 tach that looks to be from 1989 also. The tach has 2 wires on the back, a green one and an orange one that you cut or don't cut to set the number of posts on your alternator. I got it with the brown wire cut and it read 2700 at idle, way too high. I spliced the brown wire back together and it dropped to 1800, still too high. I decided to see if I can find the proper configuration before I go any further. Does anyone know what the configutration is for this tach and motor combo? The motor would be set on the 6 setting in a newer tach with a switch.
