I am trying to get this Gale 5 hp twin 63'ish running again.

I had it running last year and it ran great for a while ( 5 min.) then would not start.

I have been through it new coils, rebuilt carb, new fuel lines ...

The current issue is the more it turns over the harder the motor is to turn over. when trying to get this running I use a drill and socket on the fly wheel instead of the recoil pull.

Last night I tried to get running almost kicked in. Kept trying and the more the engine rotated the "stickier" or tighter it got. To the point where the drill would not turn the engine over. If I let it rest for a while it turns freely and then gets tight as i turn it over.

This morning I tried again and it fired right up and ran for about 2-3 minutes.

Motor ran slower and slower then stopped. It would still turn but it was very Sticky. The warmer the engine gets the less it wants to turn. Let it cool and it spins fine.

Gas / oil 24/1 mix, Smoked alot when running today

Any input to my dilemma, Rings? Bearings? Crank? Gasket sealant in the wrong place?

F R Is there a solution you would recommend.

I saw a local posting on Craigs list where the guy stated he welded the drive shaft together because the parts are no longer available?

That's the booger there. A lot of people put them back together and tig weld them. They work fine after that.

What do you look for on a visual inspection to see if these are bad. Do they have to be completely removed to inspect?

spring in one piece?

outer case together and tight?

rubber?

What do they look like when thay are bad?

The quick check is simply remove the water pump and the bearing housing below it. If that frees it up, the absorber has expanded. If it has ran any length of time that way, you will also see heat damage to the bottom of the bearing housing. Sometimes they will bend and even break the bearing housing.

If you use lots of solvent and blow out the shaft hole in the shock absorber and get it out in the bright sunlight, and look down in the hole you can usually see the broken spring ends.
