Re: gale foot help

I'm no expert by any means, but I have been working on a small Gale from the 60's and the motor had to be pulled off to get to the top of the shift rod where it attached to the shift lever. There are 2 small nuts that have to be removed.

Yours might not be the same, but.....

Nah, that's a different motor. A 40hp has an oval plate on the side of the midsection. Remove that plate and you will see the shift rod connector inside. Remove the bottom screw and then you can remove the lower unit.

On a gale 40 hp what kind of foot oil should i use. I don't want to use the wrong thing. Also what should the compression be. I have about 80lbs is that good.

Good news, it isn't picky on the gear oil. Just regular 80-90 outboard gear oil from Wal-Mart will do. I don't have compresion numbers, nor were they even published. 80 probably will do, although I sort of thought it would be a tad higher.

If you want a generic shop manual (previous question), the Seloc #1300 manual from right here at iboats isn't bad. It covers Johnson and Evinrude motors 1.5 thru 40 hp, 1956-70. That doesn't specifically include yours, but they are all related. Just pick out what applies and ignore the rest. It does include a lot of basic information that does apply.
