Hi there

I have a 40hp Gale Sovereign

Model# 40DE15B

I just changed the coils, spark plugs...all that jazz.

I have the motor starting easy and running...

Problem 1:

Start Speed - Motor dies, unless I choke it...then it stays running...have to turn choke off and on to keep it going.

High Speed - Stays running, but sometimes needs to be choked

Low Speed - Stalls out...sometimes keeps going if choked, but most times not.

I adjusted the needle valve as recommended, but not sure if it was done right.

I undo the retaining screw, remove the knob, undo and remove the seat and the needle slides out with the chrome seat and plastic washers.

I turned the chrome seat and washers until it snugged on the needle, then turned it back 1 1/2 turns...replaced the needle, installed the seat, put the knob at 6 o'clock and replaced the retaining screw.

Any ideas?

You most likely need a carb rebuild with attention to cleaning all passages and jets.
Your needle valve adjustment sounds a little involved Normally you can remove the knob and adjust from there. Then install the knob at the mid point.
You need to do final adjustment with the motor running.
Try squeezing the primer bulb if it helps then you may need a fuel pump rebuild.
Be sure all gas line connections and connectors are good.

When you install that slow speed needle, have the needle backed way (but not completely) out of the threaded insert, then put the whole assembly in the carb and snug the packing nut enough to hold it. Then turn the needle all the way in till lightly seated, and back it out from there 1 1/2 turns. Finally tighten the packing nut to make the needle stiff to turn so it stays wherever you put it. Adjust from there on a boat in the water for best running at idle.

Of course, all this is after you clean the carb and put in a kit. Need for choking means gas is not going through it, or at least not enough.
