I have a 1986 gamefisher outboard motor 5.0. I have very little knowledge of motors let alone boat motors!! If i tilt the motor, gas leaks out like crazy. We put new plug in it and shot some starter fluid into it. we could get it to run for like 3 to 5 secs. tops. whats going on here guys.?? i have gotten a hint on it being the float. i will check the spark again but i pretty sure its getting a arch. i will try and clean all the other jets also. please give whatever advice you can. thanks and whatever you put is very appreciated!!

I have the same motor, no air filter. It should be a tecumseh motor. Some parts can be found at the local lawn mower shop. I had to buy a coil from there and had them put it on. Works great now. You might want to check the float it sounds like its sticking open.

Agree on the float sticking. May want to get a fuel pump, and flapper valve just incase as well. They are problematic on those motors. Fuel pumps usually tear.

Fuel pump is right behind carb (in the body itself). Unbolt carb, tilt gasket side facing up, and you'll see red fp element. Pop off flywheel for magneto. If it's simmiliar to my 7.5 Ted Williams, it's a bit of a chore as I remember. I pulled powerhead so I could get to screws. It was the easiest way I could find. It's hard to get to screws when they are upside down, and at wierd angles. I broke gasket (powerhead base) and tried to reuse. I used a bit of gasket sealer, but it leaks a bit of water. I'm going to order a new gasket, and do it right though. I plan on keeping it anyways. My Magneto went bad on my 7.5. Thought it was the external coil, but after swapping an extra I had, still no spark. Stole one off of a parts 5hp I got.
