I have a 1988 (I think) Gamefisher 5.0 HP outboard (217-586613). I used it until 1994. It's been in the back of the shed ever since. The rope pulls and prop turns so I know it's not seized up. It was always treated meticulously.
Pulled it out the other day, it still had a faded, illegible (except 4/29/1994 date) Sears service tag on it. When I used to use it, it was in the shop 3-4 times in the 3 years I was using it steadily (each time it would run a few outtings and screw up again) and I'm thinking that it was not fixed on that last 1994 visit but I just don't remember and can't read the tag. I don't have a gas can and connector to test it out, but after this long I'm not sure it would run without some internal cleaning, but I'm not a mechanic by any means.
It was the same issue each time. I'd be going along at nice pace, and could hear the throttle easing off it's max, until it eased it's way down to off and wouldn't start and had to go to the shop again. Gas was leaking, trickling into the lake. I'd take it to the shop, go for several outtings again just fine, then it would do it again. Anyone have any thoughts on what that issue could be? Would the cost of fixing it even be worth it? I'm thinking no, unless it's possibly something very simple.
I'm definitely no outboard mechanic, and if Sears had it 3-4 times and couldn't keep it from breaking, I wonder if the problem is deeper.
Thanks!
