Hey guys

The Gamefisher 5HP is alive, Thanks to everyones help here.
50:1 TCW-3 Penzoil Small engine
RJ12YC Gapped 30
80-90 Mercury Premium Gear oil

I have some tuning questions. (Surprised? :D )

1)What RPM should Idle and WOT be at?

2)Im not seeing much smoke come from exhaust , is this due to most of it goes underwater? I did the 1 turn out from seated for the idle mixture, but had to tweak it abit to get the idle right.

3)How does the engine sound to you, what do you think it needs?

4) I did nothing to the the ignition system under the flywheel. Can you clean points while they are on the engine?

He some vids..

Run

Good tilt level

Tilted to high I think

So far thats it, gonna get the Tach on it and tweak anything I can today. Im am happy so far !!! Again thanks for dealing with all my questions , Thanks to MrCrabs , Narwals , MahtyMaht , and JB.

Thanks,
DamianJP

Thank you Jspansel !

Did good today, 6 mile run. Tried different tilts. IDLE RPM was around 850-1000 and WOT RPM was 4800-5000. Top speed was 12.8 MPH on a 12ft Gamefisher Jon boat with tool box, starting battery.

The only thing making me think is the idle needle. I seat it and go out 1 turn, does not want to start. 2 turns out it starts but doesn't idle good. Magic number was 2 1/2 half turns out. Starts up fine/easy and idles at give or take 850-1000.

Lemme know what you think.

It run greats, I would guess the idle adjustment could be dealt with by tweaking the float setting a bit and making sure the throttle butterfly plate is set a bit open at the start position...maybe play with the twist grip setting at statup and see whats what there...a touch of throttle a bit of advance???, Ah but these little things are common and usally we just learn to live with it until next rebuild....

congratulations on your rebuild, too bad you have to give it back to your friend with all the work you've put into it.

Hey guys

Thanks for all responses and praises.

Yup I like that little engine. But it makes me feel good to fix something and to see their reaction when they come to pick it up and then use it. The guy used it on a 16ft jon boat in the inter coastal the other day and loved it (and got fish too!!). Very cool stuff indeed. I still have my 1.75hp Gamerfisher (Tanaka) motor, I have some parts for it but I have some projects to complete before I get into that one.

Thanks man , little 5HP suprised me, its got some balls.

Yup it's nice to learn about a different engine / brand. Now if someone comes to me about a water pump or carb work for a Gamefisher(ESKA) , I'll tell them "Consider it done". Iv'e got to get a good manual for these engines though, I know I posted alot of little stuff that kept you guys on your toes :).

Thank You,

Re: Gamefisher 5HP up and running, tweaking questions/vids

I have a mid 80's 5HP gamefisher that wont stay running. I replaced fuel pump (duckbill) and reed valve in carb. it still runs until gas is used up in carb. bowl. I have to pump bulb to fill carb again to start it. It seems to lose prime. Any suggestions?

Sounds like it needs a fuel pump rebuild...

Re: Gamefisher 5HP up and running, tweaking questions/vids

Hey GLTECH

Well , did you...

1) Put the fuel pump element "Duck Bill" on a 45 degree angle?

2) Use a 11/64" drill bit to set the float level?

3) Cleaned the carb %110, welch plug too?

4) Use a complete carb kit when you rebuilt the carb?

5) Also check your primer assembly, try a diffrent one. Check valve in that can get screwy at times.

Whats the reed valve in the carb?

Lemme know how you made out or have other questions.

BTW whats your model number? Is this an ESKA?

EDIT!!! Losing prime is making me lean towards #5. Before you dig back into the motor/carb try a different primer assembly first to rule that out. Then if that doesn't work we'll focus on the carb and such.

if your external tank fuel line is to large and or to long this could be a a problem, also the tank position is worth looking at, with the 5/16 fuel line I like to keep it short and sweet and the tank close and high as possible

Damian, Thanks for your advice.
I did do steps #1,3 & 4. I also changed the Orings on the fuel hose quick connector.I also replaced the fuel line from the connector to the carb inside the motor. I was wondering about the check valve in the gas cap? This motor came with a small gas tank with the hose clamped to the gas cap and a quick connector on the other end, which attaches to the outboard. The cap has the breather vent with a knob- screw to open/close and a check valve. I read online somewhere that the caps go bad. I may have to get another tank and hose with primer bulb. In any case, I will go that route and let you know. I believe that this motor was built by Eska. The model # is 217586614. The mylar reed valve is in the carb (I replaced it). The old carb parts looked like new, so replacing them probably was not necessary.
