Hello all i'm new to boats and have recently bought a Gamefisher 7.5 to go on my 70's 12 ft. starcraft. I was told it was a 1992 model. The gentleman i bought it from said he had owned it for 5 plus years and never had an issue with it. I did see it run in a barrel and it seems to run well. The water output from the two holes seemed a little weak to me, seemed to just "spit" water out. Is this normal for these? I'm itching to get out on the water and do some fishing but want to make sure i do proper maintenance to the engine, guy says the engine had sat for probably a year. Here's some things i was thinking i should do, please fill me in on anything else you guys recommend.

1. verify cooling system is working properly. (replace impeller and corresponding seals, gaskets etc. if necessary/recommended)
2. Change spark plugs
3. Change fuel filter (Wheres it at?)
4. change lower unit oil

Other concerns i have:

1.The cover is broke but still latches. any concern there with water intrusion or anything?
2.The gear selection lever broke and has since been replace with a threaded piece of rod, you simply pull in and out on it to select gears, any concern running it that way?

Also where do you guys recommend i get parts? Thanks for any input.

I'm in a similar situation with a 1989 Force 5 hp. Force made the same engine for Sears as the Gamefisher 5hp, same exact engine as mine. First thing to do is get yourself the service manual on EBay. As far as the parts, if the 7.5 hp is also a Force made engine, then you can get the parts cheaper than from Sears.

With the manual, you'll know what you are doing. If your 7.5 is like my 5 hp, it's not hard to get to the impeller and see if it's ok. CAUTION: don't do it without the manual, if you accidentally lift the drive shaft in getting the impeller out, you will then create bigtme work for yourself and have to disassemble the lower unit to get the drive shaft back into the pinion gear! Get the service manual first!

Thanks for the reply. I think im just guna replace the impeller. The manual is a good idea. So what kinda water output does your engine have?

The Chrysler 6hp and 12.9hp both have an exhaust at the back of the motor midway up the leg which has water coming from it, you can tell if the water flow in a Chrysler isn't right, if you use a bucket or esky as I do and have it a few inches above the pump level, my Chrysler's will pump plenty of water at mid idle, if you use muffs, which are hard to find for these small motors, they don't seem to pump as much water from the back.

I seen it running in a large trash can. The water level seemed good to me. It was only a few inches below the exhaust holes. It definitely had water coming out at idle, i just don't know what the correct amount would be. Water output did seem to increase with throttle but it was hard to tell because it was dark and smokey. I'm really wanting to try it on my boat but i don't want to cause any damage. There's no easy way to tell when engine like this are overheating is there? I mean by the time you really know it's overheating i imagine your pushing the limits of causing damage.
