Hello,
Recently purchased a Gamefisher 9.9 HP motor as part of a older boat purchase. It seemed to run fine, only two pulls after setting for several years and it started right up.

Looking for some info.
It's Model No. 217-586251
S/N 28-231557

Can anyone tell me the manufacture, year, and parts availabliity if needed?

Is this a realible motor? What are the pitfalls and/or problems to look for?

Thank in advance, AL

Re: Gamefisher 9.9 HP

82/83 Eska built.83 Eska 14210.Out of business. Powerhead is a Tecumseh
uses a Tecumseh carb.
Ignition parts are the weak link. They are available but expensive & hard to find. Apparently prone to failure.
Also kind of an oddball ignition setup.Certified parts corp may have some parts.Probably not ignition.Somebody was on here the other day with a source for ignition parts.Good luck.I wonder if there is anyone here with an operating 9.9 or 15 Eska/Gamefisher?

Thanks Steelespike,

It seems to run OK, in a drum of water. However does stalls as you throttle up. I haven't played with the carb yet, any other thoughts?

Regards, Al

Re: Gamefisher 9.9 HP

I had one. It had a bad ignition part under the flywheel. Absolutely unavailable.

Your symptom sounds like one cylinder is not firing. Check spark. On the off chance that your ignition system is still working....never, ever crank the engine with the small wires connected to the external coils off the coils. It will fry the module under the flywheel.

Sadly, that is the part that is burnt out on most of these engines. That's why none of those parts left.

All of this is really, really too bad, because the outboard, when it is running, is a very nice one. Quiet, powerful, and lightweight.

I have no doubt whatever that the module could be repaired, but it's potted and there hasn't been enough interest for someone to work out a repair for it. Due to the small number of those outboards around, it's extremely unlikely that anyone will come up with a fix.

Bottom line is: If you have good spark on both cylinders, go ahead with other repairs. If either cylinder doesn't have spark, you're essentially hosed. www.certifiedpartscorp.com has most of the other parts for that outboard.

I'm really sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I tried for over a year on mine to find the needed part.

Hello CATransplant,

Thanks for the information! Your not the bearer of bad news, the facts are just the facts. I'll need to do some more checking, I'm hoping for spark in both cylinders. We shall see!

Best regards, Al
