Hey guys, this is my first post on this site. This is a great forum board y'all have here! I have a little problem with a motor I just bought. We got this motor running, but it wouldn't pump water, so we checked the impeller, and sure enough, it was a little ate up on the bottom. We replaced it, and when we cranked the motor, it pumped water just fine out the thermostat hole.{the thermostat was missing} So, we were spraying a little carb cleaner through the carb while the motor ran, tring to let it clean a little, and the motor choked out. We started it back up, and no water came out the hole! We took the foot back off, looked at the impeller, nothing was wrong. We sprayed air up the pipe leading towards the motor from the foot, and felt air come out the therm. hole. We put the foot back on, and still no water! Now, it seems to me, somehow there must still be something blocking the water, but I cannot find it! Just wanted to know the possibilites of anthing else causing the problem. Thanks in advance!

on the second look at the impeller are you sure you re-installed the key? also look through the water inlets in the foot for pieces of the old impeller.

Re: gamefisher 9.9 trouble

This might be obvious, but do you have the lower unit submerged in a barrel of water? No muffs, just use a barrel of water for testing.

With the lower unit removed, spin the drive shaft and see if the water pump, pumps water, it should. Were there any pieces missing off the old impeller, if yes, you'll have to hunt them down. I don't remember how the water tube attaches, but you should be able to plumb some water up into the powerhead, while the lower unit is removed, see if you have a blockage. Just need to do some troubleshooting to figure out what's not working.

Also, don't spray carb cleaner into the outboard while it's running, it will strip off oil and hurt the outboard. If you want to clean the carb remove it and then clean it up. A de-carb with Seafoam will clean up the cylinders/pistons, etc. There should be a de-carb procedure somewhere in the outboard forums, pretty simple procedure.

Good luck, it's a pretty simple outboard to work on.

Re: gamefisher 9.9 trouble

Thanks guys, figured out the water problem, had to put it in a barrel of water to get correct water level; now I have another problem. When I take this motor on the lake, it starts fine at first, but will not accelerate over about 30%. After that the further you turn the throttle handle, the more the motor bogs down. Already had the carb cleaned twice, thought the jets were the problem, but that didn't fix it. Almost like the choke won't cut off? The more you run the motor, the harder it is to keep running, 'till it cools down. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Re: gamefisher 9.9 trouble

Sounds like you have a dead coil, or no spark to 1 cylinder. Pull a plug wire and see if it will start, plug it back in and pull the other plug wire. Possibly a bad spark plug, but I'm guessing it's a bad coil, common problem.

BTW, these OB's will idle half decent with 1 dead coil, or only 1 spark plug firing.

Thanks, could be the coil, I have already checked both spark plugs for fire. I will check coil asap.

Re: gamefisher 9.9 trouble

Would I have to get the coil from Sears, or is there any Mercury or Force parts that would cross over?

So....I looked around, and found a couple different coils that could be the same, havent got to look up my exact serial number yet, but looks like all the coils are around $100...Is this the average price?

Re: gamefisher 9.9 trouble

^^^^ That should be a sticky in this forum!!!

I replaced my ignition with a CDI conversion, cost was $150-200, but everything is new. Sold the 1 good BIM coil on Ebay for $30-40 to help get another "Force" guy back on the water.

Re: gamefisher 9.9 trouble

I looked at the link, and it looks like I need part #FCB3020A, but it doesn't tell the application. The other part is #FCB3020E, and it goes from 50 HP to 150HP. Am I right in assuming #FCB3020A is the right one? Thanks in advance!

Re: gamefisher 9.9 trouble

Looked up my engine serial # tonight, its a 96-97 Gamefisher, turns out it has an ignition module, not a coil, which they do carry at Standard Magneto, but I found for almost same price at Crowley Marine. It runs a little over $80 at both places. Thanks for the help Mr Crabs, I will post back and let y'all know if this fixes my problem.
