Gaping a NGK dual plug??

I have a '02 175 HPDI and I'm changing the spark plugs. Noticed that the old spark plugs were not gapped to the manual specs- .035 to .039- they were still the same as they are out of the box. Yet the engine ran fine with the stock gap. I tried gapping the new plugs to what the manual says and when I do the metal arm is lower than the electrode. Not sure if I'm doing this right and if I even should?? I'm gapping with a wire feeler gauge.

use a feeler gauge
so u can gap both at the same time
the bigger the gap the less of the spark
shoot for .036-.037

actually they set at .024" or so and you have to follow the correct procedure and use a wire gauge. I think its in the 02 or 03 tech guide with pictures and all.
but you measure from the bottom of the U in the side electrodes to the porcelien.
double chech the correct plugs are installed as in those years there were some running changes, what color are your ign coil connectors ?

Re: Gaping a NGK dual plug??

the coil conectors are a redish orange color. got the plugs from a yamaha dealer and he didn't mention anything about a different plug for that engine. not using the actual engine manual, it's a seloc manual so it's very general. so it's actual from the bottom of the U on the electrode to the porcelain or is it to the metal center of the porcelain? thanks for the reply

Re: Gaping a NGK dual plug??

I know what color the secondary cap is :) I was asking about the color of the primary quick connects on the coil.
if the connectors are black it uses the ES-10 plugs if gray it uses the EK-U1 plugs.
some of the early HPDI motors were updated with the later ECU and coils which nessesitates the plug change, however quite often the EPA decal and cowl plug decal failed to get the change.
there are two ways to gap the EK-U1 plugs if you use the electrode to electrode method the gap is .059"-.062".
there is pictures of both methods in the 04 and 02 tech guides.
but first insure which color coil connectors you have they will be either black or gray.
