I decided to tune up my 48hp evinrude. I looked in the booked and the gap called for .030. I checked the gap on the old plugs and they were gaped at .040. I Proceeded to gap the new plugs according to the book. It took a couple of tries and the engine started. Then I tried a week later and was having difficulties. I then re gaped them to what the old plugs were and it started up just fine. Now why does the book say to gap to .030 and my old plugs were done at .040. Am I missing something??

Howdy Baitbucket.

OMC changed the standard gap on all JohnnyRudes to .040 sometime during the 80s, I think.

The .030 gaps fouled too easily in an overchoked or rich running engine.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: Gaping of Spark Plugs

Hey Thanks. I guess they forgot to change it in the manual.
