Re: garage door openers????

I was using a Gennie chain driven for years and had a few problems with the chain popping of,but the manufacter came up with a solution and fixed it for free, the new units are fine now.Screw driven are direct drive units not my choice but are not as noisey as the chain drive, for the weight of the wood door I would say use a chain driven Gennie they are faster than most out there on the market also, some have life warrenties, they come and fix it for free

Another good alternative:

Chamberlain makes a belt drive, they call it "Whisper drive." I have 3 of these between my home and workshop, all incredibly smooth, quiet, and trouble-free for 10 years so far. One is pulling on a 35 year old wooden 16 foot garage door with glass windows...HEAVY. But frankly weight of the door means absolutely nothing if the springs are properly adjusted. Besides, the belt comes with a lifetime warranty, as does the motor. I believe it's a 1 year warranty on the rest of the unit.

I'll never go back to chain/screws again.

I have a Genie screw drive that has been in use for 17 years. It operates an old wooden door that I use for my primary entrance so it gets constant daily usage. I know from mechanical experience that a chain drive would not likely hold up as long. The downside is that a screw drive is slow and powerful(mine killed a cat), so you need photoeyes for safety.

Re: garage door openers????

Big Dee, I have owned both types in the past. The craftsman chain drive I bought back in the mid 80's is still going strong and the "OLD" screw drive I had would loose most of its power when the temps dropped down below zero. I have no problem with chain drive but someone told me that the new screw drives are better so I am just looking for what garage door opener owners have to say.
