Garmin 178C Sounder

I just bought a boat that came with The garmin 178C and It isn't showing my maps. I checked the gamin website and all they have is a card that is 190 bucks and it dont even have the places I fish here. Anyone know of any place or somewhere I can get them maps?

First thing is to see if it has the latest SW update on it. The last update (ver 2.9) was released on Dec 17, 2008. Once you get that taken care of you should have a base map on the system.

Addtional detailed maps for the unit are proprietary.

The detailed maps are available on chip as you have found out or you can buy the Mapsource Software and make a chip (SD card)of only the area you want.

How exactly do you update them? Do I have to buy that 60 dollar card reader? Any other ways?

Nope. Unless you have the $60.00 card reader built into your PC or laptop. (Many do...)

If not you should be able to find a compatible card reader for around $20.00 at most office/computer stores.
